What happens to Lou at the end?

Lou on Netflix is a new action-drama starring Allison Janney and Jurnee Smollett. When a single mother learns her daughter has been kidnapped during a severe storm, she must turn to an unlikely ally for help. The two women are soon confronted with dark secrets and a formidable enemy.

Big spoilers ahead for Lou

Whether you’ve finished the movie and are still confused about a few things, or just want to know what happens at the end, the guide below will break down how Lou ends on Netflix.

Lou Explained at Netflix End: How is Lou connected to Vee and Philip?

The Big Twist Lou is that Lou is Philip’s mother and therefore makes her grandmother Vee. She convinced one of Hannah’s college friends to encourage Hannah to move to the island so Lou could keep an eye on her and protect her from Philip. The letters Philip left were actually for Lou, not Hannah. Like “Hi Mom, it’s my turn.”

Lou explained at the Netflix end: what was Philips’ plan?

Philp intended to lure his entire family to Eagle Bay, where he rigged a lighthouse into exploding by planting a bomb in it. His motivations aren’t entirely clear, but it seems like he’s just disturbed enough to believe that the only way he can bring his family back together is through death. He wants Vee, Hannah, and Lou with him so he can set off the bomb and kill them all.

Before that, Philip faked his death, tricked Hannah into thinking he was dead, and even tricked Lou. She thought Hannah and Vee were safe and their mission complete, but Philip was just using it as a ruse.

Lou’s Netflix ending explained: Why was the CIA after Lou and Philip?

When Philip was a boy he was kidnapped and Lou just let it happen, preferring the CIA to her own son. She took part in the Iranian coup in 1953 and later took documents to blackmail the CIA into leaving her alone.

As she later tells Hannah, “some people weren’t meant to be mothers.” The CIA considers both Lou and Philip to be fugitives. Philip is considered a fugitive because he is wanted in connection with several civilian murders after serving in the US Army Special Forces.

Lou Explained at Netflix End: Who Will Survive the Movie?

Lou, Hannah and Philip engage in an explosive showdown during the film’s climax. Lou follows Philip to the lighthouse in Eagle Bay to meet up with him and Vee. As I mentioned above, the lighthouse secretly had a bomb inside, but luckily for Hannah and Vee, Lou is able to defuse the bomb so nothing happens when Philip pulls the trigger.

Afterwards, Lou tells Hannah to run with Vee while confronting her son on the beach near the lighthouse. The CIA approaches by helicopter just as Lou and Philip engage in a vicious, devastating and protracted battle in the water. Philip manages to stab Lou with a knife, but then the soldiers in the helicopter shoot Philip and Lou uses his body like a shield. Mother and son sink seemingly dead in the ocean.

We find out that the suicide note Lou wrote at the beginning of the film was for Hannah. She left her house and possessions to her granddaughter and daughter-in-law so that Hannah could sell the property and have some money left over. Hannah and Vee take Jax and move to Seattle, Washington.

It looks like they’re finally at peace. The final shot of the film shows them together while Lou watches them from afar through binoculars. It looks like Lou somehow survived the confrontation with Philip.

Lou now streaming on Netflix.
