What happens if my child does not get a place at primary school?

That national offer day for elementary schools is April 19, 2022.

It’s a nervous time for parents, especially when you’ve already found a school you love.

But while there’s every chance they’ll get in, it’s worth doing a little homework to alternative options if they don’t.

There are various myths about what can hurt or hinder your chances of bagging your preferred school, but in fact schools don’t have much to do with the application process.

If your child is missing a place, get in touch your municipal administration and ask if there are still places available.

You have an obligation to find another school for your child if they are not accepted at a school to which you have applied.

This is usually the nearest school that has vacancies.

You can also put your child’s name on a waiting list, as the school’s admissions office is required to keep a waiting list open for at least the first semester of the school year.

If they’ve already been offered a spot elsewhere, that doesn’t stop you from putting them on a waitlist.

If your child doesn’t get their first choice, don’t worry as you have a few options.

They may accept another offer from a school that has enough space to accommodate them.

Your child can be placed on the waiting list at the school of your choice. While that might not sound promising, yYou may find places at your favorite school opening up as circumstances change in other children’s families.

Or you can appeal the authority’s decision to reject your application.

How can I object?

If you receive a decision refusing your child a place at the school you have chosen, do not despair, because you can appeal the decision.

You are entitled to at least 20 school days from the date the decision was sent by the school’s admissions authority.

Evidence must be provided within the time limit set to support your appeal.

Appeals are most likely to be successful if supported by evidence or a letter from a professional, e.g. a social worker.

Your appeal will take place before an independent panel that will decide whether the admissions criteria of your chosen school have been correctly followed.
