THE Sound of Music has lost a little of its fan base in the 56 years since its release, with singing nuns, wicked Nazis, and wonderful landscapes.
But what happened to the actors playing the children of the Von Trapp family?
Charmian Carr: Liesl von Trapp
Although Liesl was “16 years 17” in the film, the actor was in fact 23 years old when she beat out Mia Farrow and Geraldine Chaplin for the coveted role.
Charmian was hugely popular for her role as Leisl von Trapp in Sound of Music, but she retired from acting soon after to raise two daughters and open her own interior design boutique in California.
The actor and singer has also written two books, Forever Liesl and Letter to Liesl.
Charmian died at the age of 73 in Los Angeles on September 17, 2016, from complications related to frontotemporal dementia.

In the late ’70s, Nicholas starred in The Amazing Spider-Man on TV, and even appeared in Dallas, in 1982, playing Bill Johnson.
In 2015, he starred in a miniseries about Gallipoli as Henry Nevinson.
Nicholas remains close to all of his The Sound of Music co-stars and is very fond of Charmian Carr.
Heather Menzies: Louisa von Trapp
Heather was born in Toronto and made her film debut at the age of 13 as Louisa von Trapp.
She went on to star in various television shows, including the classic sci-fi series Logan’s run, in which she played the role of Jessica.
Heather has also modeled for Playboy.
After her failed marriage to John Cluett, she met her second husband, actor Robert Urich, while filming a corned beef commercial – they married in 1975.
Heather has since moved away from the limelight to raise her three children.
The mother and grandmother died at the age of 68 on Christmas Eve 2017 after she was diagnosed with brain cancer.
Duane Chase: Kurt von Trapp

After graduating from high school, Duane joined the United States Forest Service, where he battled wildfires, before returning to the University to earn a Master’s degree in geology.
Now 71, Duane lives in Washington with his wife Petra Maria and is returning to wildlife and forestry work after spending time designing computer software for mining and oil companies.
Angela Cartwright: Brigitta Von Trapp
The only English von Trapp, Angela, 69, was born in Cheshire in 1952 but moved to the US as a child to appear in the TV series Make Room For Daddy.
After playing Brigitta in this film, at the age of 12, she went on to star in the popular TV series Lost in Space from 1965-1968 and was cast in the TV series Scout’s Honor in 1980.
She has been married to actor and producer Steve Gullion for 44 years and they have two children.
Angela’s acting career began in the 1980s and she is now an artist, exhibiting her work in Studio City, Los Angeles.
Debbie Turner: Marta von Trapp

The couple have four daughters and live in Minnesota, where Debbie runs her own event design company now called Debbie Turner Originals.
Kym Karath: Gretl Von Trapp
The cutest little Von Trapp of the lot. Kym was only six years old when she took on the role of Gretl but she is already an established actress, having starred in Spencer’s Mountain with Henry Fonda at the age of three.
Karath said she still doesn’t like water after nearly drowning in a boat scene in The Sound of Music, because she can’t swim.
Karath graduated from the University of Southern California with a degree in humanities, and soon she moved to Paris, France, where she studied art history and modeling.
At the age of 26, she married Philippe L’Equilbec; Their son was born in 1991.
