What happened to Michael Jackson’s Neverland?

Michael Jackson, who died in 2009 at the age of 50, was one of the best-selling artists in music history.

His success brought enormous wealth and some extraordinary purchases.

Perhaps the most famous was his vast estate on Santa Barbara land, dubbed the “Neverland Ranch.”

Visitors to the 2,700-acre property would see a number of strange features, including fairground rides, a train, and even a zoo.

Jackson is said to have abused children on the property.

The singer, who died in 2009 at the age of 50, has strongly denied allegations of sexual abuse against him.

The property was sold in 2020.

Who owns Michael Jackson’s Neverland now?

In December 2020, news broke that the property had been sold to a billionaire buyer for well below the original asking price of $100 million, the Wall Street Journal reported.

Jackson originally bought it back in 1987 for around $19.5 million and spent millions adding its various odd features.

Before his death, he sold it to Colony Capital for $22.5 million.

The “Man in the Mirror” singer’s estate co-owned “with a fund managed by Colony Capital, a real estate investment trust.”

He defaulted on a loan secured by Neverland, and Colony Capital “purchased the debenture in 2008 and brought title to a joint venture it formed with the pop star.”

After a series of price cuts, the renamed Sycamore Valley Rach was sold in 2020 for $22 million to Ron Burkle, co-founder of investment firm Yucaipa Companies.

Can I visit Michael Jackson’s Neverland?

The homes of famous people, like Elvis’ famous Graceland home in Memphis, have become places of pilgrimage for mega-fans.

But those planning a trip to see how the reclusive star lived will be disappointed.

Named after the fictional story of Peter Pan, Jackson’s former estate is closed to the public.

Jackson stopped attending Neverland in 2005 after being acquitted of child molestation charges.
