What happened to Buddy Valastro’s hand?
Cake Boss star Buddy Valastro announced he was hospitalized after a “horrific” bowling accident in September 2020 that required “multiple surgeries” on his hand.
The chef’s rep spoke to PEOPLE about the accident, revealing it happened while he was having “good time” with his family at their New Jersey home, which has its own bowling alley.
The representative said: “There was a malfunction with the bowling pinsetter, a common fix in the past, but it turned into a horrible accident.”
They continued: “After trying to dislodge the bowling pin from the cage mechanism, his right hand got stuck in the unit and squeezed it.
“Unable to remove his hand, he saw a 1-1/2 metal rod slowly and repeatedly impale his hand between his ring finger and middle finger three times.”
Buddy’s sons — Buddy Jr. and Marco — then used a reciprocating saw “to cut through the metal rod and free his father from the machine.”

Buddy opened up about the horrific accident on his Instagram Stories, in which he tearfully revealed how his teenage son saved him after the metal rod impaled his hand.
He told his fans: “I had a really bad accident at my house the other day – my hand – and I’m in town with HSS to get the best possible care.”
He then turned to his followers and said, “I just want to thank you guys for all the love and support and we’ll get through this together.”
The clips ended with Buddy blowing a kiss to the camera and telling his fans he “loves” them.
How is Buddy after his accident?
Buddy announced in April 2021 that he recently underwent additional surgeries.
He called the procedure a “huge success” during an appearance on The Rachael Ray Show.
“I feel good. My hand is advancing. I had my fifth surgery about a month ago,” he said at the time.
On September 20, 2021, Buddy spoke to Rachel Ray again and gave a year-long update on the healing progress of his injury and announced that his hand is 95% healed.
“If that’s as good as it gets, Rachel, I’ll take it,” he said.
Buddy revealed he was back in the kitchen making pastries, alluding to the luck of being able to get back to work.
“The fact that I’m still able to do what I love has been amazing,” he said.
In June 2022, Buddy again updated fans on his fifth surgery, saying it was a “game changer” but adding that he will need another one.
“Before [the surgery]there was really nothing I could do,” he told PEOPLE at the time.
“I couldn’t make cakes. I really couldn’t squeeze a bag. My fingers were so stiff I couldn’t even bend them.”
He then spoke about how his fifth surgery helped him win Buddy vs. Duff season 3.
“It was scary because I didn’t know if I would even be able to compete,” Buddy continued.
“…Honestly, this season wasn’t about winning or losing. The fact that I could go back and do my craft was the win.
“I didn’t care about winning…or beating Duff. I really wanted to say, ‘Hey, look, I could still do it at this level.’ “
It is currently unclear when his sixth operation will be.
