What happened in the Baltimore, Maryland fire?
Local news outlets reported that on Monday three firefighters died, and a fourth was seriously injured after a fire occurs.
“Chief traumatologist Thomas Scalea said two of the firefighters died of cardiac arrest at the scene.” Fox Baltimore reported.
Several firefighters called “Mayday” after being trapped under the collapse.
In the early hours of Monday morning, the Baltimore Fire Department tweeted about the fire.
“Update 2-Alarm. At this time 3 firefighters have been transported to the hospital in serious condition. We are still trying to rescue 1 firefighter trapped inside. Update method The next convenience will be at Shock Trauma,” the department wrote.
What did officials say about the firefighters?
Mayor Brandon Scott released a statement on Monday following the tragic incident.
“Today, Baltimore lost three of the bravest of us: Lieutenant Paul Butrim, Firefighter/Firefighter Kelsey Sadler and EMT/Firefighter Kenny Lacayo,” Scott said.
“All have made the ultimate sacrifice. For that, Baltimore owes them the deepest gratitude and respect.”
According to the mayor, a fourth firefighter, John McMaster, is in hospital in “critical but stable” condition.
“Our hearts go out to the entire Baltimore City Fire Department when three of our bravest men fell in the line of duty. A fourth firefighter was seriously injured and life support is in progress.
“Every day, our firefighters and first responders answer the call and are ready for danger – this is our worst nightmare,” Hogan said in a statement.
Where exactly did the fire take place?
The fire broke out in southwestern Baltimore, on the 200th block of S Stricker Street.
When the fire department arrived on the scene, they discovered a large fire from all three floors of the house.
A special rescue team was called in to assist firefighters in extinguishing the blaze.
Within an hour of attempting to free the crew from being trapped under the collapsed roof, two of the trapped firefighters were removed and transported to the Trauma Room.
Two firefighters were listed in serious condition.
