What is ROC and how did it come about?

ROC stands for Russian Olympic Committee.

A total of 212 athletes from Russia will compete under the Olympic flag rather than represent a Russian country.

That follows on from the 303 team that participated under the ROC’s banner at last year’s Tokyo Olympics.

Russia admitted to repeatedly breaking the sport’s anti-doping code and was fined £7.9 million and the news resulted in more than 100 Russian athletes being banned from the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio.

Russia’s anti-doping agency has appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport against WADA sanctions banning Russian teams from competing in or hosting international competitions for four years – with the suspension cut to two years left, provided they pay a good £3.5million by July 1st – which they have successfully done.

As a result, the International Olympic Committee opened the way for Russian athletes to compete as Authorized Neutral Athletes at Tokyo 2020.

Athletes who provide negative drug tests must compete under a neutral flag and are not allowed to march under the Russian flag or wear Russian colors or symbols.

What should ROC athletes wear? Do they have a national anthem?

If the Republic of China wins any medals, the Olympic theme will play during the ceremony instead of the usual Russian national anthem.

However, this time they will be allowed to wear tracksuits in the colors of the Russian flag, as long as the word “Russia” does not appear.

In 2018, Russian athletes had to take medals while wearing gray tracksuits.

Anyone from the media has to call them the “Russian Olympic Committee” – so do your best for that.

Was Russia banned from the Olympic Games before?

This is not the first time Russian athletes have competed under a neutral banner, as they have done in the past at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang.

Back then, they were known as OAR – Olympic Athletes from Russia.

However, the name ROC was decided after the International Olympic Committee decided that the word “Russia” could no longer be used in the team name.

In 2018, the Paralympic Committee was even stricter, insisting that Russian athletes could only compete under the name NPA – Neutral Paralympic Athletes.

While all Russian athletes were never completely banned, the Soviet Union boycotted the Los Angeles Olympics in 1984.

This is because the United States boycotted the 1980 Moscow Olympics over the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan.

What is EOR?

Not to be confused with the Russians, the EOR is the well-known Team of Refugee Olympic Athletes.

It is an acronym based on the French name of ‘The Refugee Olympic Team’ – ‘Equipe Olympique des Refugies’.

In 2016, 10 men and women from countries with a lot of history like South Sudan and Syria competed in the Rio Olympics and will compete again this time.
