What are the lyrics to Jerusalem, who wrote them, is it England’s national anthem and what does the anthem mean?

England’s anthem for the Commonwealth Games is OFT considered the nation’s favorite anthem and is Jerusalem.

But is it England’s national anthem and do you know the lyrics? Here’s everything you need to know about the anthem that athletes will hear as they collect gold at the Commonwealth Games.

Is it England’s national anthem?

England doesn’t actually have a national anthem – although debate has raged in Parliament over what such a song should be sung before major international sporting events.

There was no definitive answer to the questions in Parliament, so for now the games are free to choose whether to set the mood to Jerusalem, God Save the Queen, or Land of Hope and Glory.

God Save the Queen is often used for Team GB victories in sporting events like the Olympics – but athletes from England won’t be hearing God Save the Queen when collecting gold at the Commonwealth Games.

Flashy, lively Jerusalem, however, seems to have won the hearts of the English and continues to become the nation’s darling.

In 2010, the Commonwealth Games Council for England conducted a survey of members of the public to choose the anthem – the three options being God Save the Queen, Jerusalem and Land of Hope and Glory.

And it’s no surprise that at 52 percent – Jerusalem was chosen as the anthem of choice.

Other sports also favor this patriotic anthem before matches – including cricket and rugby.

Fortunately, athletes seem to be more familiar with the words than God Save The Queen.

What are the Jerusalem Texts?

And did these feet in ancient times
Walk on England’s Green Mountains?
And was the holy Lamb of God
Seen on England’s pleasant pastures?

And the face was divine
Shining out on our cloudy hills?
And here Jerusalem was built
Among those dark satanic mills?

Bring me my bow of burning gold!
Bring me my arrows of desire!
Bring me my spear: o clouds unfold!
Bring me my chariots of fire!

I will not desist from the mental struggle;
Nor shall my sword sleep in my hand
Until we built Jerusalem
In England’s green and pleasant country.
