Did Demi Lovato change her pronouns?

Demi Lovato told entertainment companies in May 2021 that she identified as non-binary and would change her pronouns to her/them.

At the time, Lovato wrote on Twitter, “I’m proud to announce that I identify as non-binary and will officially change my pronouns to her/them going forward.”

Those who identify as non-binary do not identify as male or female and tend not to conform to gender norms.

However, Lovato announced in a statement on August 2, 2022 that she is switching her pronouns back to her/them.

“I’m still learning and coming into my own, and I don’t claim to be an expert or speaker,” Lovato said.

“Now sharing this with you opens up another layer of vulnerability to me.”

Sharing her reasons for the switch on the Spout podcast, she said she’s a “flowing person,” adding, “For me, it’s just about feeling human at its core.

“I think what’s important is that nobody’s perfect,” she said.

“Everyone gets their pronouns mixed up at some point, and learning is about respect.”

Why did Demi Lovato identify as her/her?

Lovato said that when she decided to change her pronouns to she/they, it was at a time when she felt she didn’t identify as male or female.

“When I was given the choice of going into a bathroom and it said ‘women’ and ‘men’, I didn’t feel like there was a bathroom for me because I didn’t necessarily feel like a woman,” she said of the podcast.

Lovato – who came out as pansexual in March 2021 – wrote on Instagram at the time: “Every day we wake up we are given another opportunity and chance to be who we want and want to be.

“I’ve spent most of my life growing in front of you all… you’ve seen the good, the bad, and everything in between.

“My life has not only been a journey for myself, I have also lived for those on the other side of the cameras.

“Today is a day that I’m so happy to share more of my life with all of you – I’m proud to announce that I identify as non-binary and am officially changing my pronouns to her/them will.”

Discussing her reasons for joining them/them, Lovato said she “didn’t feel like a man,” adding, “I just felt like a human. And that’s what they’re about.

“For me, it’s just about feeling human at its core.”

What did Demi Lovato say about people still miscoding them?

Lovato has opened up to her fans about recently changing their pronouns to her/them, explaining that it’s “okay” if they accidentally get the wrong gender.

On July 13, 2021, Lovato shared an Instagram post urging fans to simply “respect” their wishes.

“If you call me wrong — that’s okay,” she said at the time.

“Sometimes I accidentally get me wrong! It’s a big change to change the pronouns I’ve used for myself all my life. And sometimes it’s hard to remember!”

The singer continued, “As long as you keep trying to respect my truth and as long as I remember my truth, The Shift will come naturally.

“I’m just grateful for your efforts in remembering what means so much to my healing process.”

Lovato included a caption below the post explaining why she wanted to give her fans a statement.

“I felt the need to post this because I often find that changing the pronouns is confusing for some and hard to remember for others,” she wrote.

“It’s all about your intention. It’s important to me that you try, but if you make a mistake, it’s okay. Remember I love you and move on.”
