‘What an anti-climax’ – Baaeed’s career ends in bitter disappointment after he loses his unbeaten record

NOBODY could have predicted that Baaeed’s career would end like this.

The undefeated superstar, who was sent off at odds of 1-4 to end his career on a perfect record, flopped spectacularly in the Champion Stakes.

The four-year-old looked a shadow of his former self as he came home in fourth place under Jim Crowley, nearly two lengths behind 10-1 winners Bay Bridge.

A huge crowd of 25,000 turned up at Ascot to give him a warm farewell and there was a bubbling air of anticipation as the runners headed to the start.

But as they crossed the line, there was a deafening silence, like someone had deflated a balloon.

Both Crowley and trainer William Haggas looked slightly confused after the race and could only cite the sticky surface as an excuse.

Haggas added: “It’s sad that he didn’t win but that’s the way it is. He was a brilliant horse, he didn’t show that today but you can’t take anything away from him.”

Punters were equally shocked by the result and responded with astonishment on social media.

One said: “This has got to be one of the greatest anti-climax moments of all time.”

Another said: “I think we can stop with the Frankel comparisons now.”

While another wrote: “What happened? I didn’t see that coming at all.”
