During an episode of Celebrity Catch Up: Life After That Thing I Did, he opened up about his experience, revealing that he was once hospitalized in Zurich, Switzerland, after contracting an infection in his mustache.
“One of my mustache follicles just looked like a pimple… and it just wasn’t healing well,” he told host Genevieve Hassan via PEOPLE.
“I had gone to a doctor and at one point my lip was puffed up like a banana – it was grotesque.
“I remember trying to rip off a piece of medical tape and I couldn’t get to my teeth,” he continued.
It was then that he was diagnosed with methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), an infection “caused by a type of staph that has become resistant to many of the antibiotics used to treat common staph infections,” according to the Mayo Clinic.
At the hospital, staff kept him as calm as possible, but he knew there was still a chance he could die from the infection.
“Right now, it never felt like you were going to die — it was never something they posited, but it was always kind of understood,” he recalled. “I guess they didn’t mean to freak me out.”

Because of the location of the infection, he had to undergo surgery to remove it and he was also treated with “severe courses of antibiotics,” PEOPLE notes.
“I’ve found out from oral surgeons that the area from the inside of your eyes to the outer corner of your lips is called the ‘danger triangle,’ because there are multiple ways for a surface infection to get into the skull,” Richman explained.
‘ said the doctor [the infection] could have been anything from a water glass to a hotel towel, shaking someone’s hand and then always [touching my face]. There are many opportunities.”
