“We have been contacted from West Texas that a victim there has been identified and a scam has been made against them using a credit card here in Allegheny Town,” said Sheriff. Town of Allegheny, said Duane Fisher.

Investigators said the victim had seven separate $1,000 cash advances, all withdrawn from a bank in Leechburg. Bank security cameras and other paperwork are said to show 32-year-old Julia Marie Williams using a card and taking money.

Where does Williams get the card?

“She had been communicating with a man in Ghana through a dating site for several years,” Fisher said.

The crime, centered first in Texas and Westmoreland County, now also involves the West African nation of Ghana and the alleged online love interest of Williams and its mastermind, Daniel Asante.

“She received several credit cards in the mail. And even though the papers were in her name, the credit cards were in someone else’s name,” Fisher said.

Police went to Williams’ home and found the following.

“More than 50 items of evidence have been collected. Fisher said.

When questioned, Williams told police that she knew what she did was not right but did it anyway. She also admitted that she never actually met Asante.

“Based on what we know to date, there was never a personal meeting,” Fisher said. “There was cell phone contact, text messaging, apps, that sort of thing.”

The Pennsylvania Attorney General’s office is currently handling the investigation. Investigators are looking into whether there may be more victims.

Williams is free of bond and ready to face justice. But finding Asante and putting him on trial in Westmoreland County is highly unlikely. Westmoreland County woman charged in globally stretched credit card fraud scheme – CBS Pittsburgh
