In a social media statement, the 19-cap international wrote: “It is with great emotion that I announce that I played my last game in the colors of Rennes.

“It is a difficult decision as I have had some exceptional times here since arriving in August 2020.

“I want to thank the whole club from the bottom of my heart.

“My teammates, with whom I have had 80 fights over the past two seasons and who will remain my second family.

“To the fans for their unwavering support through good times and bad and to all the staff at the club.

“I gave my all from day one to the last in games and training, on and off the pitch and will be your number one supporter.

“I wish you all the best from the bottom of my heart. Forever. Nayef.”

SunSport revealed last month that the Hammers were close to signing the Rennes centre-back in a deal worth up to £30million.

Reports had surfaced in recent days that Newcastle were hoping to hijack the eleventh-hour move.

However, West Ham boss David Moyes seems to have found his man after he was desperate to recruit Aguerd last summer.

The defender made 40 appearances in all competitions for Rennes last season.
