West Ham fans throw fake money on the pitch as Lingard snubs Hammers over lucrative Nottingham Forest transfer

BITTER West Ham fans threw fake money on the pitch to vent their anger at Jesse Lingard’s snub.

The former Manchester United midfielder, 29, could have returned to the London stadium this summer after being released from Old Trafford.

Lingard was linked with the club for three consecutive transfer windows after his impressive loan spell in the 2020-21 season.

Instead, he accepted a lucrative £150,000-a-week contract with Nottingham Forest.

And with Forest only welcoming West Ham to the City Ground for the second weekend of the season, it’s clear that traveling fans are still feeling aggrieved.

They wasted no time raining fake £50 notes onto the pitch as Forest prepared to take a corner in a pre-planned gesture devised by fans on social media.

Lingard, whose every touch was met by a chorus of boos from the Bridgford End, didn’t really take the corner.

But the protest had the desired effect as Sky TV cameras showed the cash surrounding Neco Williams, who delivered the cross.

Ironically, Lingard revealed he had turned down even larger offers on the continent to agree to terms in the East Midlands.

He said: “I could have gone abroad for big money but I want to stay in the Premier League.

“Forest wanted to come to my house and take me to London in quick succession to try and close the deal.

“The manager and owners have been great with me – they have shown love and intent in bringing me to the club.

“When I see that kind of love, of course I’m going to say yes, but it had to be the right deal for me and my family.”

SunSport columnist Troy Deeney defended his close friend Lingard.

He said: “I have seen the criticism he has faced for his decision to join Nottingham Forest via West Ham and the fact that he is now making good money.

“If I were Jesse, I would be speaking with my feet on the field, which will ultimately hurt her more than any direct reaction.

“If you worked at Asda and Morrisons offered you double, every person who works at Asda goes to Morrisons.

“But if you work in football and you’ve been offered double the money, should you stay and be with this team? I don’t understand.”

To add salt to the Hammers’ wounds, Lingard’s throw inadvertently set up Taiwo Awoniyi to open up Forest’s goal – just minutes after Said Benrahma’s goal was chalked off at the other end.
