IT was a classy pud in the seventies and now Neapolitan ice cream is making a comeback.
The treat with the three classic stripes is high among consumer favorites in polls, with internet searches up 200 percent.
Traditionally made in a block divided into three flavors – vanilla, chocolate and strawberry – it can also be wallet-friendly.
Laura Stott tastes different Neapolitan-style tubs for taste and value, rating each out of five.
Sainsbury’s, £1.80, 2L: Great family size tub for a weeknight treat.
Pink is a bit paler than some, but doesn’t affect the taste.
High quality ice cream with a nice and creamy taste and easy to spoon
Perfect for skittles. Inexpensive crowd pleaser.
Tesco, £1, 1L: Served in a posh paper pack so easily cut into neat portions.
But the ice is pretty watery.
No real flavor in the strawberry.
Looks great though, especially the bold berry color.
Gianni’s, £1.19, 2L, Aldi: My favourite. Delicious and milky, especially strawberry and vanilla.
So delicious that both adults and children will find it difficult to resist.
Perfect budget family pud, tastes way more expensive than it is. Delicious.
Lidl, £1.45, 2L: Excellent all-rounder for taste and price.
Creamy vanilla is my favorite here, while chocolate and strawberry are both on the sweet side but still enjoyable.
Easy to scoop, good to twirl into bags.
Wall’s, £2, 1.8L: A twist on tradition – strawberry and vanilla ice cream with a green stripe. Good quality.
Firm in the bowl but melts in the mouth without causing a brain freeze.
Pricey but for a 1.8 liter tub.
Morrisons, £1.59, 2L: This looks unexciting with its no-frills packaging.
But the ice cream is wonderfully creamy – far more than you would expect at this price point.
Only downside is that it takes a while to thaw after freezing.
Asda, £1.50, 2L: Great bang for your buck.
The flavors aren’t bad for the price, but could be more intense – the chocolate is the best.
After freezing, it takes a while to soften. But great value.
Add sprinkles or sauce for extra fun.
Iceland, £1.70, 2L: Decent flavors but slightly more expensive than some competitors.
The chocolate has a rich cocoa flavor.
The creamy vanilla also tastes like the real thing, although the strawberry doesn’t go together as well.
