“Well, I’m sore” – Tiger Woods withdraws from the PGA Championship after throwing five straight bogeys in the disastrous third round

TIGER WOODS has pulled out of the US PGA Championship through injury after a disastrous third round, after complaining that he was “sore”.

The 46-year-old was only competing in his second tournament after suffering serious leg injuries in a horrific car accident in February 2021.

A bar, several screws and pins were used after the golf legend suffered open fractures to the top and bottom of his tibia and fibula in his right leg, as well as a broken ankle.

Woods carded nine over 79 on Saturday to leave him as the joint bottom of the 79 players who made the cut.

That put the 15-time major champion 12 over par for the tournament – 21 strokes behind round three leader Mito Pereira.

In his third-worst round in a major, Woods made five consecutive bogeys in a major for the first time in his pro career – including a triple bogey on the sixth par-3 hole.

After his bad outing, the American remarked: “Well, I’m sore.

“I know that’s a fact. We’ll do some work and see how it goes.”

He added: “I just wasn’t playing well. I didn’t hit the ball very well and didn’t have the start I needed.

“I thought I hit a good tee shot on the second and ended up in the water. I just never really had momentum on my side.

“I couldn’t get off the bogeyman. I didn’t do anything right.

“I didn’t hit a lot of good shots. So I ended up with a pretty high score.”

The PGA of America subsequently confirmed Woods’ retirement, as President Jim Richerson noted, “Tiger Woods has informed us that he is retiring from the 2022 PGA Championship.

“We admire Tiger’s brave efforts to compete here in Southern Hills and wish him well as he continues to recover from his injuries.”

Woods, who also played as Augusta at the Masters in April, has already hinted that he wants to compete in the 150th Open Championship at St Andrews in July.
