“I knew it had to be mine”
The original Mar-a-Lago, which means “sea to sea” in Spanish, was built between 1924 and 1927 for grain heiress Marjorie Merriweather Post.
In 1972, Post offered her house to the US government in hopes it would serve as the “Winter Whitehouse” because she was nearing the end of her life and feared it would be leveled after her death.
The government only found out about the outrageous child support fees, which totaled $1 million a year, after her death. In 1980 they returned the gift to the Postal Foundation.
The property was later put up for sale by the family for $20 million, but no buyer could be found, so permission to demolish was sought. Then, in 1985, it was reported that Trump was in the back of a Palm Beach cab looking for suitable real estate when his driver told him about the Mar-a-Lago resort.
Within days, Trump tracked down the location, its origins, and its owners, later recalling, “I knew it had to be mine.”
