We will be moving because a bus stop is being built in front of our house – I won’t be able to park anywhere

A COMPLAINED couple say they have no choice but to move home because a bus stop is being built in front of their beloved home.

The extensive building work is part of a £24million refurbishment program in Cambridge.

Julian and Bethany Blakeman said building a bus stop in front of their home is forcing them to look elsewhere for property.

Julian, a caretaker at a local school, said he needed quick access to his car because he could be called 24 hours a day in an emergency.

He said he can no longer park his car in front of his house – a problem when he’s on call at night.

Julian told Cambridge News: “My biggest fear is when the alarm goes off, who knows when I’ll have to get up and go downstairs in the morning.”

Ms Bethany said she was concerned Julian would have to walk to his car in the dark when he was on call.

“It’s not safe to walk down Milton Road after dark, let alone in the middle of the night,” she said.

The Greater Cambridge Partnership (GCP), meanwhile, said they are consulting with local residents about the new plans and designs for cycle lanes and bus routes, which are estimated to cost £24million.

This also includes the location of new bus stops.

GCP confirmed it will launch a public consultation on its resident parking proposals next week.

A spokesperson said: “GCP consulted the public on the Milton Road project in 2015/16 and 2018 and following feedback from local residents and ongoing collaboration with the Milton Road Local Liaison Forum (LLF) we have made several changes to the designs, such as the location of bus stops.

“Once construction is complete, the Milton Road Project will provide safer and more reliable bus and active travel between Cambridge and northern communities to reduce congestion and improve air quality along a busy route in and out of the city.”

The upgrade is estimated to require two years of road work.
