“We mustn’t give up”

PSG midfielder Marco Verratti Yes to swear to fight after a sudden removal from French Cup in Monday.

The Parisians were beaten 6-5 on penalties by domestic rivals Nice after the two teams drew goalless in normal time. 18-year-old Xavi Simons missed the decisive kick in his sudden death, ending hopes of reaching the quarter-finals of the tournament.

This is also their earliest departure after 11 years. As disappointing as it is for his side, Verratti feels all is not lost and calls on PSG to fight hard for the matches ahead.

“We have to keep working. We must not give up, we still have very important matches. We have to continue like this and do more.”

The Italy international was one of their best performances of the clash, completing 98 successful passes and creating a number of scoring opportunities. He also scored his own penalty in the penalty shootout.

But it’s still not enough. Not even Lionel Messi could rescue them, with the Argentinian largely silent during open play, although he also made no mistake from 12 yards.

PSG still chasing two titles

Parisians are still competing on two fronts, Ligue 1 and Champions League. They boast an 11-point advantage over second-placed Nice with just 16 games left in the campaign, and will be through to the knockout stages in Europe.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side drew Real Madrid in the round of 16 in a difficult encounter for both teams.

The French giants have reached at least the semi-finals of the tournament in each of their last two seasons, breaking a streak of three consecutive exits from the last 16.

PSG strengthened their squad significantly last summer, with top players like Messi, Sergio Ramos, Gianluigi Donnarumma and Giorginio Wijnaldum.

Expectations are high at the moment, increasing pressure on Pochettino, who has suffered a string of disappointing results in the last few games.
