A MARRIED couple broke down in tears after receiving a card from the Queen on the day of their death.
Joe Wilkins, 85, and Terry Wilkins, 83, of West Sussex celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary with their family on Thursday.
But only half an hour before, the news of Her Majesty’s death had swept the country.
The Queen died peacefully surrounded by her family at the age of 96.
Her death marked the end of her historic reign and sparked a wave of grief around the world.
What Terry and Joe didn’t know was that a signed card had been sent by HRH the day before, congratulating them on their 60-year marriage.
Her daughter Claudine Phillips described the coincidence as “bitter sweet” after her mother burst into tears.
Claudine, 53, told The Argus: “It was also my son’s 17th birthday so we had a big family snack planned for 7pm.
“Of course the announcement came at 6:30 p.m. and we had the card on the table, my parents didn’t know about it.
“It was really bizarre to be honest we were celebrating something so big but then half an hour before we heard the sad announcement I can’t even explain how it was very, very weird.
“My mother cried when she opened the card, she was so shocked.”
Claudine’s nephew had arranged for the card to be sent to the couple.
Because of the postal strike, the family had feared it might not arrive on time.
Claudine, who traveled to the celebrations from Dubai, said the timing of the card was “eerie” but “overwhelming”.
She added: “We had set the table with all the gifts for the meal earlier that day and he was there with the rest of the cards.
“It was almost eerie how many people received a card from Her Royal Highness, signed by her, just half an hour after her death was announced?
“To be honest it was a bit overwhelming to have that affinity that day.
Everything you need to know after Queen Elizabeth II has died aged 96
THE nation is mourning after the beloved Queen Elizabeth died aged 96 – here’s everything you need to know about Her Majesty’s glorious life and what’s next.
“I think we shall now have a photograph of Her Majesty framed for the table for the party, it seems appropriate.
“Everyone will be talking about it, everyone will be talking about it tomorrow, she touched everyone’s heart. So it feels like the right thing to do.”
It comes as the Queen’s four children bowed their heads in a moving vigil over their coffin last night.
Her Majesty is currently residing at St Giles Cathedral in Edinburgh.
Mourners passed in solemn silence as King Charles III, Princess Anne and Princes Edward and Andrew stood guard on either side.
Many have curtseyed to Her Majesty, bowed their heads, crossed their hearts, or saluted while pausing in silent reflection.
Silence filled the old building, the only sound being the audience’s footsteps as they slowly walked by.
Thousands are expected to follow while she lies in state until evening when her coffin flies back to London.
The Scottish crown was placed on her coffin, draped with the Royal Standard of Scotland, during a Thanksgiving service at the historic building.
The Queen will be buried at 11am on Monday 19 September.
