Rooney wanted Hourihane, 31, to lead promotion to the Rams’ League One and offered a three-year deal when Chris Kirchner was set to buy the club.

But Roo’s decision to quit has left many current Derby players and goals stunned.

He also had a loan deal with Manchester United for Dylan Levitt, 21, who spent last season at Dundee United.

Derby will look to tie Curtis Davies and Ravel Morrison and sign new contracts for young players.

But there are now doubts about Phil Bardsley and Tom Barkhuizen, who were on the club’s wish list.

Meanwhile, Derby’s much-needed takeover has received a major boost after they secured a loan from a local businessman who was preparing to buy the club.

The joint administrators of Quantum have now announced that they have secured a loan from Clowes Developments Ltd. based in Derbyshire.

David Clowes, chairman of the real estate company, is a Derby supporter.

In a statement, he said: “Derbyshire-based property group Clowes Developments (UK) Ltd is proud to announce that it has successfully bought the company that owned Pride Park Stadium from local businessman Mel Morris.

“In addition, Clowes has provided the club with a temporary loan, allowing Derby County to start and trade next season while a club purchase deal is finalised.

“Clowes has also confirmed that they will be making an offer to buy Derby County Football Club today.”
