Even if your router is brand new, there are certain things and places in your home that could slow down your WiFi speed.

Homeowners often place their Wi-Fi router out of sight — in a closet or against a wall.

However, these placements can do more harm than good.

Concrete and brick walls in particular can slow down WiFi speeds.

Five reasons why you should NEVER share your WiFi password, even with friends

In a series of tips for maintaining a strong Wi-Fi connection, Allconnect.com suggests that even a load-bearing wall between your router and the device it’s connected to can cause problems.

One way to fix this, according to the internet comparison company, is to use a mesh network or Wi-Fi extender.

Aside from walls causing problems, windows can also affect your WiFi connection.

To ensure the strongest Internet connection in your home, place your router upright rather than on the floor—perhaps on a shelf or table.

Keeping it away from other devices like a TV or microwave will also reduce interference.

Here is a detailed list of places and objects to avoid when setting up your WiFi:

  1. Other Wireless Devices
  2. bluetooth devices
  3. The corner of a basement or a secluded corner
  4. baby monitor
  5. cordless phones
  6. In or behind cupboards and furniture
  7. Anything that might block modem ports
  8. metal building materials
  9. building materials made of concrete
  10. building materials made of glass
