With his team trailing 1:3 overall and with just 13 minutes to go, the Scot asked the Frankfurt bench for the ball.

After it was rolled at his feet by a ball boy, Moyes angrily threw it straight back at him and was then shown a red card by referee Jesus Gil Manzano.

Moyes, 59, said: “I kicked the ball back at the ball boy so I apologize for that but he threw it at me very slowly.”

The Hammers boss was already seething about Aaron Creswell’s first-half red card.

West Ham, who were 2-1 down in last week’s first leg, got off to a brilliant start against the Bundesliga side.

But the game was turned on its head in the 19th minute when Creswell received a red card after a VAR check for bringing down Jens Petter Hauge as the last man.

Just seven minutes later, Frankfurt scored again with a goal from Rafael Borre.

The ten-man Hammers tried their best to get back into the game but couldn’t beat Frankfurt, their European tour ending at the penultimate hurdle.

Following Scotland’s impressive comeback against RB Leipzig, Frankfurt will take on Rangers in the Europa League final later this month.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side went into the second leg tonight trailing 1-0 from their first game in Germany last week.

But first-half goals from James Tavernier and Glen Kamara turned the tie on its head.

The in-demand Christopher Nkunku equalized overall with 20 minutes remaining – only for John Lundstram to fire a winner home for the Gers.
