AUSTRALIAN OPEN fans were shocked when youngster Jakub Mensik fell from debilitating cramps during the men’s singles final.
The 4th seed was forced to lie flat on the front when his legs became stiff during terrifying footage of the three-way marathon.
And the Czech star ended up having to leave the field in a BIKE after the pain became too much to bear.
Mensik faced top seed Bruno Kuzuhara in Saturday’s game at Rod Laver Arena.
Serving to stay in the game against his American opponent, Mensik won a protracted rally to pull it back 30-30.
But seconds later, he was seen clutching his leg, which had begun to spasm terribly after nearly four hours of the action.
Mensik appears to pull themselves together and possibly serve again – albeit with great displeasure.
And finally, the 16-year-old player hit two consecutive double errors for Kuzuhara to seal the victory 7-6, 6-7, 7-5.
Any thoughts of an honor roll were quickly forgotten when Mensik hit the floor a second time and Kuzuhara sprinted around the net to check on his opponent.
The young American star can be seen shaking the runner-up’s hand as the doctors rush to his side.
He was soon sent off and proved unable to return to the trophy ceremony.
Then, Kuzuhara triumphantly said, “First, it’s an unfortunate way to win.
“I wish Jakub a speedy recovery. It was a great fight. We pushed each other until the last minute.
“Great match, if you’re watching inside. Thank you buddy. ”
