This is the horror moment when two aerobatic stunt planes collided in mid-air before falling to the ground killing both pilots.
The terrible crash happened shortly after 6 p.m. on Saturday near the Leumnitz airfield in Gera.
Dramatic footage shows the two planes flying parallel before an elaborate maneuver goes awry, causing them to crash and become stuck together.
The planes can be seen falling to the ground and bursting into flames as black smoke billows from the crash site.
Rescue workers rushed to the scene and the area was cordoned off, Bild reported.
Pictures from the crime scene show firefighters extinguishing the fire on the wreck just a few meters from residential buildings in the Thränitz district.
A spokesman for the fire department confirmed the deaths of the two pilots after the collision.
The pilots, identified as Michael S., 42, and Dieter G., 72, were killed during a training session for a so-called “mirror flight,” in which one plane flies parallel to the second.
The pair are said to have flown in formations for years and even won the world title in vintage aerobatics in 2019.
The cause of the accident is still unclear, as specialists from the Federal Institute for Aircraft Accident Investigation and the Gera Criminal Investigation Department have taken over the investigation.
Aircraft accident expert Norman Kretschmer told the sales outlet: “So far there is no evidence of a technical defect.
“We found signs of deformation on the wings that indicate a massive impact.”
Aviation expert Andreas Spaeth meanwhile added: “It looks as if both pilots wanted to train a joint figure in aerobatics with their aircraft. Then apparently there was a collision.”
“Contrary to expectations, no visible parts broke off. It’s more like the two machines got stuck and became unable to maneuver and then collided with each other.”
