Where to watch the top Oscar contenders, whether it’s Netflix, Hulu, HBO Max, Amazon, Disney+, Apple, VOD – and in some cases, the cinema.
In 2022, watching Oscar contenders is an exercise in bewilderment. As distributors build release schedules around late-January Oscar nominations, this month is a great time to catch up in theaters. This year, we don’t have nominations until February 8; We also have Covid and the constant struggle of specialized exhibitions. Their films were more succinct, released more widely before moving to VOD’s greener pastures.
In theory, home access would be good news – but the ability to watch a movie at home isn’t necessarily the same as knowing where to find it. Finding major category contenders means keeping track of their VOD release dates or searching for them on one of the six major streaming platforms.
Listed below are 44 movies that are considered Academy Award candidates, as well as a few that rank high on the 10 best lists. The family platform will be available on January 21 and 28. A few have yet to hit theaters. Most are showing in at least a few theaters, though lists of titles from Netflix and Amazon can’t be found.
