Watch Steven Gerrard turn around and face Man Utd fans who booed the former Liverpool captain’s appearance in the Aston Villa Cup tie

STEVEN GERRARD turned and stared down at a hostile Manchester United crowd who booed him as he walked to the dugout for tonight’s FA Cup clash at Old Trafford.

The Aston Villa boss has received a less than friendly response from Reds loyalists because of his legendary status with their big rivals Liverpool.

Gerrard was regularly banned by United fans during his incredible 17 years as a Red Devils player.

But tonight’s clash at Old Trafford is his first time leading a team as a manager.

The 41-year-old stepped out of the tunnel and started to move up the line.

As he did, he heard loud boos from behind him and turned on his heel to look back at the flying crowd.

The former England midfielder has never shied away from a challenge in his playing days and he seems to have adopted that approach to management.

Gerrard’s relationship with the Red Devils brotherhood appeared to have improved in the summer when he revealed he had hailed by legendary United manager Sir Alex Ferguson for the title-winning work he did at Rangers.

But the old instincts in the Old Trafford faithful kicked in when he stepped onto their pitch again this evening.

Gerrard succeeded fired Dean Smith as Villa boss in November.

In 2012, he revealed that he had once turned down Ferguson’s opportunity to play for MU, as well as Jose Mourinho at Real Madrid because he did not want to leave Liverpool.

However, it was United fans who got the last laugh on the occasion, as their side won 1-0 thanks to a Scott McTominay header in the first half.
