Watch Phil Foden’s delicious assist for Kevin De Bruyne’s Man City opener just 79 SECONDS after coming on

It took PHIL FODEN just a few seconds to convince for Manchester City against Atletico Madrid.

The 21-year-old star was surprisingly dropped from the starting line-up for the Champions League clash by Pep Guardiola.

Still, he had a big say in how the quarter-final first leg at the Etihad played out against the LaLiga winners.

After the goalless game, Foden came on in the 68th minute as part of a triple substitution from Guardiola.

And the move paid off immediately for Man City as it set up Kevin De Bruyne’s winner.

Foden received the ball with his back to goal about 30 yards out but turned quickly and before a fierce challenge came his quick feet allowed him to slide a pass through for De Bruyne to run on and finish.

That was enough for last season’s defeated finalists to secure the lead ahead of the second leg in the Spanish capital.

It comes after it emerged Foden agreed a fundamentally new contract with the Premier League champions back in October – but has not yet signed on the dotted line.

The playmaker is believed to be making £150,000-a-week with his improved package at the Etihad.

City’s top three earners are Belgian playmaker Kevin de Bruyne, Jack Grealish and Raheem Sterling at more than £200,000 a week.

After the game, De Bruyne said: “The first half was tight, in the second we had a couple of chances and it was good that we took one.

“I ran and Phil [Foden] thought I was perfect, I had to keep my cool and luckily I did. It’s very hard.

“They played with almost five at the back and five in midfield.

“I commend anyone who says anything [about us]that they try to play against it on the training ground.”

“We have to stay calm and not try to interfere with their action. It’s their way of playing.”

“One on zero is one on zero. I expect something similar there. When the game is tight, they have to attack a little bit more.
