Members of LIV Golf have been banned from the PGA Tour and most DP World Tour events, but can play at Wentworth if they finish in the top 60 in the world.

A total of 17 players from LIV Golf will take part in the tournament this week – much to Horschel’s annoyance.

The tense exchange of blows between Poulter and Horschel came just 24 hours after the latter struck at the Ryder Cup legend alongside fellow British player Lee Westwood.

The defending BMW PGA champion said: “As much as I got on very well with Lee and Ian, they have been supportive of the Tour for quite some time in their careers.

“I honestly feel it’s a slap in the face to the rest of the members of this tour.

“That they come to play I believe the biggest purse on the DP World Tour with a full field. They’re going to take money out of the boys’ pockets this week.”

Fast forward a day and Horschel was locked in a heated discussion with Poulter in a video shared by National Club Golfer’s George Cooper.

It remains unclear what Poulter and Horschel were talking about, although eyewitness Cooper has stated that it didn’t appear like a friendly conversation.

He remarked: “Although they were too far away to understand what was being said – and my lip-reading skills just aren’t what they used to be – it certainly didn’t look like a friendly catch-up.”

“I reached out to Poulter for comment afterwards, but he (politely) declined.”

Golf fans had their own take on what was said between the two, with one Twitter user writing: “Horschel: football is football. Poulter: No! Football is football.”

Another quipped: “Obviously they can’t agree on the restaurant for tonight…”

A third added: “These guys are obviously very passionate about putting techniques.”

This person then joked, “I’m definitely talking about fantasy football trades.”

Rory McIlroy recently admitted to falling out with his European Ryder Cup team-mates, where he said: “I wouldn’t say I have a huge relationship with them at the moment.

“You are here. They’re playing the golf tournament. I don’t think they should be here, but again, that’s just my opinion.”
