Watch former Arsenal player Mesut Ozil score for the second straight game but the Besiktas chief reckons he was lucky to avoid a red card

MESUT OZIL has scored in head-to-head matches for the second time this season.

But that was not enough to secure three points for Fenerbahce against Besiktas – who believe the former Arsenal player should have been sent off.

After scoring in the 3-2 loss to Gaziantep last time out, Ozil opened the scoring in this bitter Istanbul derby in the 14th minute.

Fenerbahce was awarded a penalty and the captain made no mistake.

Ozil, 33 years old, leisurely dribbles and shoots carefree to put the ball into the low corner, causing the opponent’s goalkeeper to make a mistake.

It was his seventh goal of the season, which included fourth of his last six games, and sparked wild celebrations at Sukru Saracoglu Stadium.

But Besiktas, who started Michy Batshuayi and Miralem Pjanic, was worried that Ozil had lasted the full 90 minutes.

The club’s vice-president Emre Kocadag believes the former Germany international may have seen red.

Kocadag said: “It was a good derby. It was a game where we dominated from start to finish and played well.

“However, it was a struggle marked by refereeing mistakes.

“Firat Aydinus didn’t direct the game, he managed. The penalty was not a penalty for us.

“We went back and watched a game where we were partners and were affected by the referee’s mistakes and the decisions he didn’t make.

“Aydinus doesn’t have many yellow cards.

“Attila Szalai and Miguel Crespo could get five or six cards. Maybe with Mesut it’s a direct red card not for Ozil.”

It is unclear what Ozil did to anger Kocadag but he clearly felt the red card was the necessary punishment.

Ironically, Fenerbahce received two yellow cards – Szalai and Serdar Aziz, who were equal to Batshuayi – from 20 fouls but Besiktas had 5 warnings from just 12 fouls, sending the visitors to a boil.

Ozil’s penalty was canceled in the 25th minute as Josef de Souza equalized.

But the visitors leveled the gap in just 5 minutes when Mergim Berisha hit Fenerbahce’s net.

However, De Souza got his second goal of the game just before the match ended 2-2.

This result gives Fenerbahce 28 points after 17 matches, 14 points behind leaders Trabzonspor as they approach the mid-season point.
