New Austria coach Ralf Rangnick could only watch in dismay as Christopher Nkunku’s pass put Mbappe on target.

The killer turned on the afterburners as he moved away from the likes of David Alaba before blasting home with a sharp finish.

The result saved a point for World Cup winner Didier Deschamps.

But France remain without a win in three Nations League games.

They first lost 2-1 to Denmark before conceding a late equalizer against Croatia on Monday.

Austria took the lead after 37 minutes through Andreas Weimann, who fired from close range after a counterattack.

But Mbappe, who came on with half an hour to go, had other ideas with his equalizer seven minutes from time.

And the striker almost won it for France at the last moment when his shot was deflected off the crossbar by Austria’s goalkeeper.

Mbappe said: “We didn’t come for that but we will take that point and try to win on Monday.

“I’m not 100% fit but I’ll play if I have to. It’s the last game before the holidays so we can push it a bit.”

Boss Deschamps added: “I’m disappointed we didn’t score more for all our chances.

“Sometimes we score more goals with fewer chances, but I’m not worried. I’ve been dealing with minor injuries and fatigue.”

France end their international season with a second game against Croatia on Monday.

Their final Nations League games will be in September.

And France’s World Cup adventure in Qatar begins on November 22 against either Australia or Peru, who also play on Monday.
