Watch as Arsenal’s Eddie Nketiah misses the open goal after howling at the Juventus goalkeeper in the friendly

EDDIE NKETIAH is the man tasked with filling in Gabriel Jesus’ footsteps, but based on this evidence, it could be a tough challenge.

During Arsenal’s last mid-season friendly before the return of domestic football, Nketiah had a great opportunity to lead his side 1-0 against Juventus.

The Hale End graduate rushed into the Italy side’s defense on a sloppy back pass to set up with an almost open goal.

However, he missed this chance by slamming his shot against the woodwork.

And that lack of recklessness was punished when Granit Xhaka headed the ball into his own net just before half-time.

Nketiah didn’t have the best of luck throughout the match.

Just before his miss, he thought he had given Mikel Arteta’s side a goal only to rule it out.

The 23-year-old has played as an understudy for Jesus all season.

And after the Brazilian’s injury, he will now be tasked with leading the line for the next three months – unless Arsenal sign a direct replacement.

He has proven himself to be a capable substitute in the Europa League, scoring two goals.

But his record when he plays in the prem is what he’s ultimately judged on.

A purple stain at the end of last season gave Nketiah five goals in seven games, including braces against Chelsea and Leeds.

Despite winning their last two friendlies against Lyon and AC Milan, Arsenal are set to end the mid-season in defeat after Rob Holding deflected an attempt into his own net to help Arsenal suffer a 2-0 defeat.
