Cooper was catching up with the young black marlin when he suddenly darted out of the water as the teen tried to grab the line.
The quick-thinking Cooper jumped out of the way as he was almost impaled by the spiked sea creature.
He told 9News: “I grabbed the hooklink but the fish decided it wanted to be in the boat and came straight at me.”
The marlin landed on the stern of the boat three miles offshore before falling back into the water.
Cooper and his father, Al McGlashan, then broke it.
Al shared the terrifying close encounter on his YouTube channel.
He said: “A marlin jumped into the boat and almost impaled the crew in the goolis.
“In all my time fishing I’ve never had such a close chance and it all happened off Sydney.”
Black marlin can weigh almost 1,000 pounds when fully grown.
Males can grow up to 9 feet long while females can grow to over 15 feet.
It comes after a fisherman reeled in a shark on a beach in front of stunned onlookers.
Footage shows witnesses rushing to help get the animal back into the water in Perth as it thrashes about on the sand.
Meanwhile, a fisherman had a frighteningly close encounter with a great white shark while diving off the coast of South Africa.
Johan Potgieter had to fend off the aggressive predator with his harpoon and only narrowly escaped.
Potgieter and other divers were spearfishing in the sea east of Cape Town when the terrifying creature attacked.
The following terrifying moments were captured by an underwater camera as Potgieter swims for his life to the safety of a boat.
