The first episode of Netflix’s new Ryan Murphy series Monsters: The Story of Jeffrey Dahmer has an interesting scene in which serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer (Evan Peters) convinces his victim, 32-year-old Tracy Edwards (Shaun J. Brown), to watch The Exorcist III: Legion with him. Dahmer claims he loves the film and “watches it every day.”
It would be weird enough for a serial killer to be obsessed with it The Exorcist to the point that you watch it every day, but why the third film? In keeping with William Peter Blatty’s film trilogy, the third film was much better received than the planned second film, The Exorcist II: The Hereticbut it still feels random.
Is Dahmer’s obsession with the third move in Blatty’s “Faith Trilogy” true, or did the writers make up this interesting fact for the show?
Monsters: Was Jeffrey Dahmer obsessed with The Exorcist III in real life?
They say truth is stranger than fiction for a reason, and nobody proves that better than Jeffrey Dahmer. Yes, he was actually obsessed with it The Exorcist III. Not only that but monsterWhat happened the night Dahmer took Edwards home (which eventually led to the killer’s arrest) appears to be correct, right down to Dahmer getting Edwards to watch the film with him.
Because Edwards survived, he was later able to tell his story and true account of the Night Games very accurately with what was portrayed in the Netflix series.
As for why Dahmer loved The Exorcist III, to the point where he’s forcing his victims to watch it, the reason is just as creepy as you might expect. Dahmer reportedly identified strongly with the film’s fictional killer, The Gemini Killer, who is played in the film by Brad Dourif. Ironically, the Gemini Killer was at least partially inspired by another real-life serial killer, the Zodiac Killer.
Screen Rant further analyzed the chilling connection between Dahmer and The Exorcist IIIand identified some of the uncanny similarities between the way the Gemini Killer and Dahmer would dispose of their victims.
In The Exorcist III, The Gemini Killer referred to holding heads and parts from his victims. Dahmer’s fascination with how the human body works likely spilled over into his obsession with the fictional character of the exorcist, as The Gemini Killer spoke at length about draining the blood from a body before decapitation.
