Was Jeffrey Dahmer in the military?

Jeffrey Dahmer was the focus of one of Netflix’s most popular true crime series, Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story.

The series told the story of how Dahmer was able to murder and dismember 17 boys and men for almost a decade before being arrested by the police.

In the series, we see Dahmer enlist in the military, but like many true crime documentaries, much of what viewers see is dramatized.

Which led to viewers wanting to know if Jeffrey Dahmer actually served in the military.

The answer is yes — Jeffrey Dahmer actually enlisted in the military in January 1979, just a year after he killed his first victim, Steven Hicks.

Dahmer was pushed into service by his father, Lionel, after finding out his son had dropped out of Ohio State University.

Upon enlistment, Dahmer first completed undergraduate training at Fort McClellan in Anniston, Alabama before completing residency training at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas.

During his time as a medic, Dahmer was reportedly considered “an average or slightly above average soldier.”

When was Jeffrey Dahmer stationed in Germany?

After completing the required training, Dahmer was deployed to Baumholder, West Germany, on July 13, 1979.

During his deployment, Dahmer served as a medic in the 2nd Battalion, 68th Armored Regiment, 8th Infantry Division.

In Germany, Dahmer is said to have regained a taste for terror and violence.

Preston Davis, 58, said he was raped by the serial killer in October 1979 while he was working alongside Dahmer in the medical department, according to the Daily News.

Davis was just 20 years old at the time of the alleged sexual assault.

While the couple was on a mission in Belgium, Davis reports that their military vehicle broke down and was towed to a train station.

Davis then explained how it was around the time the attack took place.

He said: “Sometime during this period I was sexually assaulted, which included penetration.

“I think I was drugged because I was wasting time and have memory lapses. I must have been so ashamed because I barely remembered the event.”

A second alleged victim also reported and told of his service at Dahmer’s side.

Billy Capshaw waited until his father’s death to tell his story because his experience “was too embarrassing and I didn’t want my father to know”.

Capshaw was just 17 when he first met Jeffrey Dahmer and the two became roommates.

During his time as Dahmer’s roommate, Capshaw reported being tied to his bed, beaten, and tortured by Dahmer.

Recalling his experience, Capshaw said: “He took all my clothes away from me. He would either hit me before he raped me or he would hit me afterwards.

“I thought about killing him and I thought about killing myself.”

Why was Jeffrey Dahmer kicked out of the military?

On March 24, 1981, Dahmer was honorably discharged from his position after completing just two years of his initial three-year tenure.

Dahmer was fired after being deemed unfit for work due to his extensive alcohol abuse.
