Wantaway Man Ud striker Anthony Martial ‘skipped £30m Newcastle transfer’ as French ace holds out for move to Barcelona

ANTHONY MARTIAL has turned down the opportunity to join Newcastle from Manchester United.

The French striker became the most expensive teenager in world football when the Red Devils signed Monaco for an initial £36m transfer to him in 2015 in a deal that could rise to £58m.

The 26-year-old has enjoyed a memorable start at Old Trafford and has scored 79 goals in 268 appearances for the club.

But he has found himself on United’s pitch in the past year and he has just started two Premier League games this term and only has two more in the national cup.

That has led to rumors surrounding Martial’s future with Spanish side Sevilla involving a loan deal while Barcelona are also said to be very interested.

However, there is also speculation that Eddie Howe’s Newcastle wants to take him to the North East.

The relegation fighters have bolstered their bid for survival with the £12m signing of full-back Kieran Trippier from Atletico Madrid on Friday.

Defense remains Howe’s main target in the transfer market but Callum Wilson’s injury has now forced him to look for attacking reinforcements.

But it looks like Newcastle will have to look elsewhere for now, though they are willing to splurge to secure his services.

Spanish publication Sport stated that Martial arts ‘not interested’ in signing with Magpies.

And it even says that the star ‘refused to sign the Magpies after they put a £30m bid on him.

Now, it looks like a move to Spain is Martial’s preferred option, with United boss Ralf Rangnick having admitted that ace wants to leave Old Trafford.

He said recently: “He explained to me that he had been at Manchester United for the past seven years and that he felt the time was right for a change, to go somewhere else.

“I think in a way this is understandable, I can follow his thoughts but on the other hand it is important to see the situation of the club.

“We have the Covid era, we have three competitions where we still have high ambitions and want to be as successful as possible.”
