Walmart urges shoppers to flag overpriced items after court case alleges the company and Target overpriced

WALMART shoppers have been encouraged to report overpriced items to store employees after a double-track lawsuit accused the retailer and Target of overcharging.

One consumer was so concerned about the alleged overcharging of their products by Walmart and Target that they filed two separate class action lawsuits against them.

Yoram Kahn filed both lawsuits against Walmart, Inc. and Target Corporation in August 2022, reports Top Class Actions.

The lawsuits alleged that both retailers have “shelf prices” that “often misrepresent the prices consumers are charged at the point of sale.”

This is false advertising, Kahn claims, in violation of the Illinois Consumer Fraud and Deceptive Practices Act and the Illinois Uniform Deceptive Trade Practices Act.

“We encourage customers to alert our staff to any pricing inaccuracies, and we’ll be happy to look into the matter,” a Walmart spokesman told Best Life.

“We are reviewing the complaint and, if necessary, will respond in court after it has been served on us.”

Walmart shoppers allegedly pay five to 10 percent more for mispricing, the lawsuits say.

While Target buyers pay an extra five to 20 percent, the suits claim.

Kahn also claims Walmart and Target are aware that retailers are “deceiving its consumers.”

“Consumers reasonably rely on shelf prices to make informed purchasing decisions and reasonably expect to pay the advertised shelf price when they arrive at the checkout,” both lawsuits state.

The US Sun reached out to Target for comment.

Walmart and Target are just two of the 61 stores fined for overcharging customers at the checkout.

Dollar General is also included in the list.

The North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services’ Standards Division (NCDA&CS) collected the money from businesses in 32 counties.

The department discovered the errors in scanning prices as it conducts regular unannounced inspections to verify accuracy.

The process involves checking advertised prices and the prices that appear at checkout.

If a store has an error rate of more than 2 percent for excessive charges, inspectors contact store managers for a follow-up, says The NCDA&CS.

Fees that are too low are also reported, but do not count as a transaction.
