Customers have already experienced the additional fee while shopping, as single-use bags are no longer available in Walmart stores or for pickup.

But now the 42 cents are added to delivery orders.

However, customers can opt out of purchasing bags when completing their order, but must leave tote bags or reusable bags at their doorstep.

According to Walmart, shoppers will continue to see bags used as needed for raw meat, protein, produce and chemicals to ensure food safety and prevent potential cross-contamination.

THE BAGS BAN

The Litter Free NJ campaign was started by the New Jersey Clean Communities Council, which banned new single-use plastic and paper bags in response to rising plastic pollution.

The ban went into effect back in May 2022, urging all retail, grocery and food service establishments in New Jersey to comply.

Disposable paper carrier bags were allowed to be provided or sold except in 2,500 square foot grocery stores.

Stores that are larger may only offer or sell reusable tote bags.

It’s not just the garden state that’s turning.

Across the country, several other states have banned single-use plastics to curb pollution.

States like Vermont, Maine, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, New York and Oregon have also eliminated single-use bags.

OTHER WALMART CHANGES

While the bag ban adds additional fees for delivery, not all changes will cost customers.

In December 2022, Walmart officially introduced the Text to Shop feature, which brings more convenience to shoppers.

The feature is linked to your Walmart account, where the company keeps track of your items and previously purchased products.

It works like this: send an SMS with the items you need and they will all be added to your shopping cart.

Then select from the selection of products including items from your local store and from Walmart.com.

Send a “backorder” SMS to review and add your frequently ordered items to your shopping cart.

Shoppers then pay via SMS or the Walmart app and choose the pickup or delivery time slot.

In addition, Walmart is expanding its beauty department in-store and online by offering 50 new Olive & June products.

The company will be introduced in over 2,500 Walmart stores nationwide and on the Walmart website.
