Wales boss Mooney spat with a fan on Twitter after suggesting Tom Jones should sing the official World Cup song

WALES boss Noel Mooney has been embroiled in a Twitter spat with a Wales fan after he suggested Sir Tom Jones sing their official World Cup song for Qatar.

Mooney, chief executive of the Football Association of Wales, wrote on Wednesday: “Any thoughts on an official World Cup song for @Cymru @FAWales? Asking for a friend” with a picture of the Welsh singing legend Jones.

But Mooney’s post drew criticism and sparked a public row on Thursday morning, in which he told a Wales fan to “unfollow” him.

Welsh fan Chasing The Dragon (Q) @chsingthedragon responded to the original tweet about Jones: “If it’s Tom Jones you’d have to resign.”

The spat escalated when the Wales fan was asked what he meant by Mooney?

@chsingthedragon added: “About the endless silly ‘I’m making a playlist’, ‘Show me your bucket hat pics’, ‘Tom Jones joke’, ‘Our story, our fight’ tweets, presumably around himself to flatter the people.

“Contrary to brilliant communication work already done by seasoned professionals.”

Irishman Mooney, who is active on social media, chimed in, replying: “Just unfollow. Easy. For me it’s really good to understand the views of our people and it helps in our decision-making to keep improving to become a leading footballing nation.”

@chsingthedragon said, “Is that your actual answer? ‘Just unfollow?’ Wow, I took some people’s point of view, that’s all.

“‘Just unfollow’ contradicts your next sentence when you say ‘It’s really good to understand our people’s views.’

Mooney added: “Very pleased to hear all the views. But if you find discussions about Welsh football crazy, that’s a view I hadn’t heard before.

“The discussion about where we should invest our resources or how we should improve the game or what music people like is not silly to me. That’s my view.”

@chsingthedragon added: “If you’re happy to hear all the views, ‘just don’t follow’ was an odd opening sentence. I’m not saying improving or discussing Welsh football is crazy, am I?

“I’ve been at this for 40 years and hopefully for another 40 years and I’ve spoken about Welsh football every day since 1976.”

Mooney said: “Great… will check what I tweet to make sure it’s not too boring… and Diolch yn fawr for your support. We are going in a good direction and there is still a lot to come.”

@chsingthedragon said: “Thanks for the unnecessary sarcasm. You don’t have to thank me for my support. I wish you a nice day.”

Mooney began his role as managing director of Wales last August after working at Uefa as head of strategic development.

Wales meet arch-rivals England, USA and Iran in Group B at November’s World Cup.

The Wales side have adopted Shakira’s ‘Waka Waka-Song’ after qualifying earlier this month, while Dafydd Iwan’s Yma O Hyd is also hugely popular with Welsh fans, players and management.
