Vulnerability warning in Apple, Samsung and Google payment apps puts Visa & MasterCard users at risk

Mobile wallet users globally have been warned about a new vulnerability in Apple Pay, Samsung Pay, and Google Pay that could expose them to fraud – and both Visa and Mastercard users are at risk.

This vulnerability is due to contactless payments, known as Near Field Communication (NFC) payments, being used with transit features and the dangers they pose to mobile phone users.

Timur Yunusov, a security expert at Positive Technologies, spoke this week about contactless payment apps and their potential for fraud at a European Black Hat 2021 session.

Based on Tech RepublicYunusov explains that the absence of offline data validation leaves people vulnerable to paying for subway or bus tickets without unlocking their phones.

People in the US, UK, China and Japan should heed this warning because they could be victims.

“In order to carry out the attack, smartphones with Samsung Pay and Apple Pay must be registered in these countries, but the card can be issued in any other region,” Yunusov said.

“Stolen phones can also be used anywhere, and this is also possible with Google Pay.”

The report notes that Positive Technologies contacted Apple, Google, and Samsung regarding these issues in March, January, and April 2021, but the global cybersecurity company is aware that no changes have been made. present to make the system more secure.

“The only problem is that now big companies like MasterCard, Visa and AMEX don’t have to follow these standards when we talk about NFC payments – these companies were different at the beginning of the years,” said Yunusov. 2010 and people are now doing what they want here.”

The Apple Pay, Google Pay and Samsung Pay apps all pose a similar risk to this threat, but Visa card users are at higher risk than those using Mastercard or American Express as a form of payment, the expert said. .

Yunusov said Visa doesn’t use ODA security at the point-of-sale terminals – that’s why the payment method is more vulnerable than Mastercard, which uses ODA (foreign data authentication). line).

Despite what Yunusov has said, a Visa spokesperson told Tech Republic that most contactless fraud schemes have been researched and found to be impractical at the scale needed to solve the problem.

“Multiple layers of security are used to protect payments and consumers benefit from Visa’s no-liability guarantee,” the spokesperson said.

“Visa takes all security threats seriously and is constantly evolving its payment security capabilities to protect cardholders from the latest real-world threats.”

The Sun has reached out to Apple, Google and Visa, but did not receive an immediate response.

To better enhance mobile pay app security, Yunusov suggests developers to fix the problem with Apple Pay Authentication, Pay via Google Pay on CVM Unlimited, and get more field validation for public transit programs.

While, ZELLE users are also being warned that cybercriminals are trying to steal their cash.

And iPhone thieves have discovered a new way to break into stolen devices, according to a report.

The supposed crooks trick users into handing over their Apple ID to bypass settings that lock intruders away from expensive devices.
