Mr. Macron said there should be a useful response to Ukraine.

Meanwhile, Putin praised France’s role in shaping European security.

Macron called for a de-escalation on the Ukrainian border when he sat down to negotiate, adding: “Dialogue is necessary because that is the only thing that helps to build a security and stability landscape on the continent.”

Putin’s spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, described the visit as “very important”, but added: “The situation is too complicated to expect a decisive breakthrough after just one meeting.”

Russia have 100,000 troops at Ukraine border and Putin is asking NATO and the United States for security guarantees.

As fears of an invasion mount, it was revealed yesterday that Britain will send 350 more troops – elite Royal Marines from 45 Rangers – to Poland.

Defense Minister Ben Wallace vowed to stand with Poland as he increased the British forces there from 250 to 600.
