THE MELBOURNE A-League derby was abandoned after fans stormed the pitch and attacked a goalkeeper with a metal container in chaotic scenes.
Melbourne City were leading the rivals 1-0 after 21 minutes when a flare was thrown onto the pitch behind one of the goals.
The fans then rushed on for security and the referee tried to protect City goalkeeper Tom Glover.
However, the metal bucket was thrown onto the stopper, causing him to bleed from his face.
Substitutes also ran to the hotspot to help.
The referee and the players were led into the tunnel for their safety.
