The bloody clashes come as the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, Easter week and the week-long Jewish Passover all occur at the same time.

Two days earlier, Israeli police stormed the complex after saying Palestinians had “defiled and desecrated” the mosque.

Palestinian officials accuse Israel of trying to share the holy site.

“What happened at Al-Aqsa Mosque is a dangerous escalation, the consequences of which must be borne solely by the Israeli government,” said Nabil Abu Rdeneh, spokesman for Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.

They stepped in to allow a routine visit by Jews to the holy site and found dozens of Palestinians had stockpiled rocks and erected barriers.

They were cleared from the vast compound while dozens more stayed inside the mosque and chanted “God is Greatest.”

Armored Israeli riot police officers were captured entering Al-Aqsa and hit with smoke bombs as they tried to fend off protesters.

A video released by police showed small groups of young people throwing stones at buses outside the old town and setting off fireworks at the mosque.

Another police video showed a bus carrying Jewish worshipers having stones thrown at them and another showing passengers sitting on the floor of the vehicle.

The Palestinian Red Crescent said 17 Palestinians were injured, while five people on the buses were hospitalized with minor injuries.

Al-Aqsa is the third holiest site in Islam while it is the holiest place for Jews, who refer to it as the Temple Mount.

It comes as Israel has become has been rocked by “a wave” of atrocities orchestrated by ISIS and the militant Hamas movement in recent weeks.

In the past two weeks, Ramadan celebrations have been marred by a dramatic rise in violence across Israel – with 11 people dead.

The decades-long conflict between Israel and Palestine has spilled blood on the streets as tensions ran high.

Four people were killed and several others injured by a knife-wielding madman in the southern city of Beersheba on March 22.

The Arab attacker – a former high school teacher – cruelly drove his car into a cyclist in his 60s before stabbing five people.

The 34-year-old assailant, known to security services, began his murderous rampage after stabbing a woman at a nearby gas station.

Bystander heroes eventually shot dead the knifeman, who was described by Israeli authorities as an Islamic State sympathizer.

The incident was the highest death toll in a single attack on Israelis since 2017, when a Palestinian rammed his truck into a group of soldiers in Jerusalem, killing four of them.

The attack appears to have sparked a competition to surpass the new gruesome milestone as the worrying rise in terrorism continues.
