VIDEO: The 5 Floor Club ‘SNL’: Mulaney Greeted by Steve Martin, Tina Fey

Saturday night liveThe 5-Timers Club is getting pretty full, but it managed to attract one more member to its ranks this week when John Mulaney once again hosted the show.

No Tom Hanks this time; he was the pitcher when a sketch first introduced the concept in 1990, and he showed up this past December when Paul Rudd (just barely) joined the club. But present to greet Mulaney were Rudd, Steve Martin, Candice Bergen, Elliot Gould and Tina Fey.

Mulaney receives traditional distinctions from veterans. Bergen doesn’t know who Mulaney is; His response: “Well Candice, you wouldn’t know me, but if you have a niece or a son who plays poorly in sports, they might.” Martin calls him Megan Mullally. Gould doesn’t even remember being on Mulaney’s sitcom.

If you’re wondering what it takes to be a good Timer 5…it will help you recover from failure. Mulaney jokes about “Dan Aykroyd’s tequila” getting no response, but he won them back simply by saying, “Listen…”

That’s why it was so weird when Conan O’Brien (the club’s doorman from Hanks’ 1990 introduction) showed up, because he was master flop recovery. Not only SNLO’Brien’s director blows into O’Brien’s entrance, O’Brien groping for one of his own lines. But his drunkenness quickly sent everyone back to the ship.

Maybe it’s time for Conan to host. After all, what is he doing besides a podcast?
