This year, Saturday night live hired an entire team to draft Please Don’t Destroy in hopes of being able to replicate the success of the viral videos on The Lonely Island in the 2000s. The hard work of the trio of Martin Herlihy, John Higgins and Ben Marshall seems to be paying off; After a few sketches aired in the latter third of the show earlier this season, “Three Sad Girls” increased in the first half hour of this week.
The premise is simple: The cool boy Pete Davidson comes into the PDD’s office and offers to shoot a music video with them; he calls them “boys” and the trio literally melts in pride. They are thrilled…until they discover the content of the song. We see the video with topless Davidson rapping about his enviable life – court benches, paparazzi, celebrity friends – and then the boys find themselves skewed. smooth R&B are three sad virgin girls.
They stopped recording the video to confirm that the song wasn’t about surname, and they guarantee not. They’re just playing characters – except that the next line calls them by name, and it disappears from there. Bad associations are made with their looks (including, oddly enough, a second mention of Big Bird’s feathers falling out in this episode), Marshall is forced to wear pigtails and skirts, love medical condition is revealed (“That’s my real doctor!” lamented Herlihy).
Taylor Swift appeared at the last minute of the clip to perform the song’s bridge, warning the boys of their personal shortcomings. Marshall looks like “a sad Ron Weasley, what he would look like if Big Bird had lost all of its feathers,” she said. The singer then took aim at Herlihy, claiming he had “the charm and sex appeal of a scarecrow.” (Watch the full video embedded above.)
