Vermont couple share story of a rock smashing through their windshield in Collier County

A couple on vacation in Vermont have a story for the ages after a rock fell from the back of a truck and bouncing through their windshield on Tuesday.

Will and Amaryah Pendlebury say a lot of work remains to be done. They were traveling on I-75 in Collier County when the rock bounced off a pickup truck and flew towards them.

The rock that hit Amaryah on the shoulder made it look like she had a road rash. She also had glass spray all over her body and had a lot of minor cuts from small crumbs, but she’s just happy this isn’t much worse.

Signage is an important part of Pendlebury’s world. That’s how they communicate because Will is deaf and this rock is a sign they can’t ignore.

“I think for me, remembering that all the little moments are really important,” says Amaryah.

It was a big moment when dirt and rock broke through their windshield on I-75. Amaryah said, “I don’t know what just happened. I didn’t see the rock, didn’t know where, didn’t know what hit us like just now, it felt like something fell from the sky.”

The rock fell from the back of a white pickup truck. Will witnessed it happen and said it was terrifying. Amaryah translated Will’s signature saying, “the police are glad we didn’t go astray because the rock could have hit us more directly or we could have run over the jeep.”

Amaryah said, “I could have died, it could have been really bad.”

Instead, it makes for a really good story. One thing this family will never forget during their vacation from Vermont. And a sign that will stick with them forever.

“We are really lucky and so grateful to be able to hang out with our family today,” Amaryah said.

The rock will return to Vermont with the pair. They said they would leave it in their pocket, the extra weight was worth it.

Now all they’re asking is pickup truckers to take care to fasten loose things in the back so this doesn’t happen to anyone else.

The Florida Highway Patrol is still searching for the truck from which the rock fell. Vermont couple share story of a rock smashing through their windshield in Collier County
