US tourist, 26, dies after falling almost 40ft off a cliff into the sea on the Spanish coast

A California man has died in Mallorca after falling nearly 40 feet off a cliff into the sea.
The 26-year-old American had come to Cala Varques in Mallorca with his girlfriend before the fatal incident.

The tourist is said to have fallen into the sea from a height of about 40 feet.
The exact circumstances of this latest tragedy are still being investigated by the National Police, but it is believed the victim misjudged his jump and instead of landing in the water, banged his head on the rocks.
Ambulances, police and sea rescue rushed in and tried to revive the man, who was badly injured in the head – but could not save him.
According to the island press, the horrified occupants of a sailing boat in the area witnessed the accident.

They not only called the emergency services, but also rescued the man and took him back to the beach, where the health services were already waiting.
Locals say the beautiful spot where the accident happened is a very treacherous danger zone as the water hides the rocks.
There have been numerous accidents in the area, including last June when a 17-year-old tourist was injured after jumping 15 meters into the water.
And in 2021, the emergency services themselves publicly warned of an increase in spinal cord injuries from jumping on the rocks of Cala Varques.
Cala Varques is in the municipality of Manacor and has one of the most beautiful beaches on the island.
The accident happened around noon on Saturday and a full post-mortem is being carried out.
Diario de Mallorca says that many tourists and residents use the cliff next to the sea in Cala Varques to jump into the water.
But the newspaper warns: “It’s a very dangerous jump and it’s common for these people to misjudge the jump and instead of falling into the sea, they fall onto the rocks.”
