JBER spokesman Eric Eaton said the soldier died from his injuries.

They were training with a small group at the time of the attack.

They have not been identified as officials are contacting the soldier’s next of kin.

Officials say the animal remains at large and is being hunted by troopers, KTUU reports.

The species of the bear remains unknown.

The attack took place at Area 412 and will remain closed to the public.

Officials will release more information as it becomes available.

Around 100,000 black bears live in Alaska and the state is home to at least 40,000 grizzly bears.

In October 2021, a cyclist in Cantwell was bitten by a 500lb bear while riding his bike.

Alaska Department of Public Safety officials said in a statement, “The bear made contact and bit the victim’s lower leg, just below his knee.”

The cyclist carried a gun but did not open fire on the animal.

And last July, Richard Jessee survived a bear attack that occurred near his cabin.

He was riding his ATV when the beast struck.

He told Nome Nugget: “The bear came out of nowhere. He rolled over my bike and trailer like it was a toy car.

“I was in shock and hypothermic.”

Jessee managed to take shelter in his log cabin and put a piece of wood on his roof that said SOS.
