US midterm election sees Democrats retain control of Senate after crucial Nevada victory gives Joe Biden a big boost

Democrats will retain control of the Senate after winning a key victory in Nevada state in the 2022 midterm election.
In a major push for President Joe Biden, his party has won several crucial seats in a bid to gain a majority.

Senator Catherine Cortez Masto has beaten Republican rival Adam Laxalt, who was backed by ex-President Donald Trump.
On Friday, Senator Mark Kelly won re-election in Arizona to take the Senate seat count to 50 while Republicans have 49.
The results add up to the best midterm performance for a session party in 20 years, leaving Biden extremely pleased.
The race in Georgia is supposed to go into the runoff in December – but still don’t gamble away the triumph of the Democrats.


If the Senate is split equally between the two parties, Vice President Kamala Harris will have the casting vote.
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said the results showed Americans disapproved of the Republican Party’s “violent rhetoric.”
He said it also proves “that we believed in our democracy and that its roots are strong and it will prevail as long as we fight for it”.
The GOP had expressed hopes of a “red wave” sweeping the nation to take control of the upper chamber of Congress.
Though they made some gains, the Democrats outperformed their peers in the 2022 midterms.
Speaking of a summit in Cambodia, a beaming Joe Biden said of the results: “I’m not surprised at the turnout. I’m incredibly happy.
“And I think it’s a reflection of the quality of our candidates.”
