US fans threaten to give up citizenship after USMNT Twitter feed made joke of Taylor Swift

US soccer fans are threatening to ‘leave the country’ after a pathetic joke by Taylor Swift went viral from the official USMNT feed.

The USA will take on England in the group stage of the World Cup in Qatar today in Qatar.

After drawing their first game against Wales, Gregg Berhalter’s men are desperate for valuable points against the Three Lions.

Iran stunned the Welsh in Doha today, leaving the fate of the US firmly in its own hands.

Fans on both sides of the Atlantic were already looking forward to the big event.

But the official USMNT Twitter feed inadvertently managed to unite both US and England fans with some pointed banter.

The account tagged pop star Taylor Swift, writing, “@taylorswift13 we know you love your London Boy…but we’ll do our best to make Miss Americana proud today.”

The post – which referenced Swift’s song London Boy from her 2019 album Lover – was accompanied by a US soccer jersey that read ‘Swift’, number 15, on the back.

Despite the good intentions, the post backfired as fans from both teams flocked in.

One wrote: “Where’s the renounce citizenship button?”

Another moaned: “Delete that right now”

A third said: “I can’t believe this is from an official account.”

And another joked: “This is so cheesy. Not the mood we need on game day!”

While one England fan laughed: “You’ll never take stuff like that seriously as a footballing nation.”

Swift recently made headlines after a Ticketmaster farce left thousands of her fans without tickets for her upcoming tour.

In 2015, the hit star invited the US women’s soccer team to the stage to celebrate the World Cup with them.

The team partied with Swifty in New Jersey and performed the World Championships to enthusiastic concert-goers.

The USMNT will be hoping to repeat that success in Qatar but face a tough test against England.

Gareth Southgate’s Three Lions were in superb form as they beat Iran 6-2 in their World Cup opener.
